Karin Sander in Conversation with Dr. Jörg Garbrecht and Katharina Wenkler

Karin Sander (*1957) is one of the most important conceptual artists of the present day. With minimalist poetry, Sander questions the conditions of art and reality. Seven of her Call Shots can be seen in the exhibition The World in My Hand. In this series, Sander programmed her smartphone between 2014 and 2018 so that a photo is taken every time she receives a call and the phone also records her location via GPS. The “call shot” thus becomes a readymade of the moment: While Marcel Duchamp proclaimed the found object to be a work of art, with Karin Sander it is the existing moment.

Taking the Call Shots as a starting point, Jörg Garbrecht and Katharina Wenkler talk to Karin Sander about artistic strategies, the role of the processual and about Sander’s masterful duality of conceptual rigor and refreshing lightness. The question of how the smartphone influences artistic creation will also be discussed.
