Gudrun Kemsa, Subway 10, 2017

© Gudrun Kemsa / VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn 2024

20-minute guided tour followed by a lunchtime snack
with Dr. Sally Oey

In the almost two meter long photograph, seven people can be seen carrying out an activity that is all too familiar to us: they are waiting for the subway. Some have pulled out their smartphones, others are lost in their thoughts; it is a moment of patient endurance and pause. At first glance, Gudrun Kemsa’s work Subway 10 appears to capture any day in New York City. But the more you take in the photography, the more the scene appears carefully staged. The platform is lit like a theater stage and image elements such as the visible steel and concrete pillars structure the image in a striking way. The renowned photographer occupies a special place in the tradition of street photography by using her “organizing eye” to capture moments that often convey a special silence beyond the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Experience contemporary art in the compact format of a lunch break! The Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung’s Lunch Breaks offer intellectual nourishment and culinary delight at the BlackBox. The foundation’s team provides 20 minutes of insights into the current show on changing artworks and themes. Afterwards, there will be the opportunity to exchange ideas over a midday snack – either in the sculpture garden or the BlackBox, depending on the weather. The lunch snack is included in the ticket price.
