New headquarters of the Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung

From August 1, 2024, the Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung München will have its headquarters and exhibition spaces at Georg-Muche-Str. 4 in Munich’s district of Parkstadt Schwabing. In 2021, the Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung opened its ample 200 sqm exhibition space “BlackBox” on the ground floor with an adjacent events room full of natural light. The newly rented first floor of the building is divided into an office wing and another large exhibition space.

In addition to contemporary offices, there are meeting rooms in which the Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung can welcome the numerous expert colleagues and partners from Germany and abroad to discuss and drive forward the multitude of joint projects. At the heart of the office wing is a library with exhibition catalogues, specialist magazines and publications on contemporary photography and scultpure with glass.

On the same floor, the Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung is opening another art space, also with 200 square meters. This doubles the total art space of the BlackBox and will provide adequate space for large-scale photographs and spatial installations using glass. The first exhibition over two floors will open in February 2025 with LOVE, MAYBE on the subject of sexuality.

“We are delighted to have our new contemporary headquarters with modern exhibition facilities in the heart of the young, dynamic Parkstadt-Schwabing district,” says Dr. Eva-Maria Fahrner-Tutsek, Chairwoman of the Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung. “Here we offer all Munich residents and international visitors the opportunity to engage with specific themes of topical interest in contemporary art.”

The striking office building at Georg-Muche-Str. 4 was designed by raumstation Architekten and references the distinct style of early 20th century industrial architecture. With its shimmering black artificial stone façade, it stands out among the surrounding buildings and was the inspiration for the name of the “BlackBox” art space.

The lighting design for the new exhibition space on the first floor is again being carried out by the lighting design office Ingenieure Bamberger. Their lighting concept for the ground floor was awarded the “Lighting Design Award 2023” in the “Visitor Experience & Museum Exhibition” category and the “German Lighting Design Award” in the “Museum” category. The freelance architect Sven Hedrich, who was also responsible for the interior fit-out of the art space on the ground floor of the BlackBox, is responsible for the interior fit-out of the first floor.

With the move to Parkstadt-Schwabing, the Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung is opening a new chapter in its history. Since its founding in 2000 by entrepreneur Alexander Tutsek and Dr. Eva-Maria Fahrner-Tutsek, the foundation has been inspiring the art-loving public with an ambitious exhibition program in the historic Art Nouveau villa in Schwabing – in addition to its extensive funding activities in the fields of science and art. Since its first exhibition, the Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung has brought together works by world-famous established artists, who partake in the Venice Biennale exhibitions, with young talents on changing socially relevant themes – or presented artists in Germany for the first time.

Among the villa’s 18 highly acclaimed exhibitions were – to name but a few – GLASS.CHINA (2008), IN THE NAME OF LOVE (2012), WO BIST DU? SCULPTURES BY ERWIN EISCH (2013), ANN WOLFF PERSONA (2014), HAVANNA SHORT SHADOWS (2018) and ABOUT US. YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHY FROM CHINA (2020). The monograph ABOUT US accompanying the exhibition, published by Hirmer Verlag, presented 220 works by forty Chinese artists from the collection of the Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung for the first time. The publication was awarded the German Photo Book Prize 21/22 of the Stuttgart Media University in the category “conceptual-artistic photo book” in silver.

The socially highly relevant and touching exhibition SO MUCH LOVE AND COMPASSION with contemporary photographs by Sergey Melnitchenko and Adriana Lestido and the presentation of the ongoing series “Recovered Identity” in the medium of glass by Silvia Levenson was another highlight in the exhibition program of the Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung. At the same time it marked the conclusion of that very program after two decades of successful work at the villa. Thus, the farewell party at the end of November 2023 was called: “Goodbye Villa – Hello BlackBox”.
